Lucky, always the light sleep
out of necessity, opened his eyes when he heard a noise. He clapped his
hands and the lights turned on revealing his little sister comfortably
sprawled out
in the middle of his room.
Lulu giggled. ''Do it again Lucky! Do it again!'' It was magic.
Lucky gave a small smile. ''Shh, don't wake anybody up now. Can you close the door for me Lulu?'' Sonny had installed the new lighting system when it became too hard for him to reach over and flick on the lights. Lulu thought it was wonderful.
Lulu quickly complied in hopes of seeing the magic happen again. She quietly shut the door as she had done on so many other secret nights with Lucky and walked over to his bedside. Lulu gave him a questioning look.
Lucky patted the side of the
bed. ''Come on up. I won't throw up.'' He watched as Lulu scrambled onto
the chair that everyone who visited him sat in then into bed. He waited
until she had
settled herself before clapping his hands again.
Lulu giggled again. She gave
Lucky a big hug. ''Thank you for the magic.'' Lulu sat up. Lucky was sweaty.
She took the damp cloth from the bedside and wiped Lucky's face like she
had
seen mommy do.
Lucky lay still as she ran the
cloth over his face, then pulled her into a long embrace. Tears rolled
down his face. ''You can make it too, you know. All you have to do is to
clap your hands
and it will happen.'' He cupped his hands over her hands
and they clapped the lights back on.
Lulu grew silent as she lay by Lucky's side, unicorn in hand. ''But you are still going to die. I can't make any magic to keep you alive can I Lucky?'' She looked at Lucky imploringly.
Lucky shook his head no. ''Sometimes magic doesn't work. Can you open the window for me Lulu? I want to see everything once more.'' He had asked his dad, Sonny, Mike, and whoever else had been up here this morning to push the bed to the window so he could look out.
Lulu furiously turned the knob until the window was wide open. She reached out and took a leaf from the tree just outside Lucky's window. ''Heaven is prettier then here. I saw it once. I know you saw it too.'' Lulu gave the leaf to Lucky.
Lucky stared at the leaf in his hands. ''Wasn't it pretty? I remember seeing the trees and the river. And it was safe. Plus I could see Dan and Lo. Then mom came in and woke me up.'' Lucky made a face.
Lulu giggled when she saw Lucky's face. ''Mommy woke me up too. But I didn't know it was her because of the green stuff. Stop making that face!'' Lucky obeyed and for a long time Lulu just watched as her brother concentrated on breathing.
His face showed the same expression that she had seen the other night when she snuck into his room to see if he was okay. He had been completely happy. Lucky wanted to go to heaven.
Lulu placed her hands on Lucky's
pale cheeks. ''You can go first if you want. To heaven. I don't mind. And
I know everyone else doesn't mind either, even if they act like they do.
We
all want you to stop hurting.'' She gave him a peck on
the lips.
Lucky took a deep breath. ''But I won't get to harass the first boyfriend you bring home.'' He slowly reached his hand out and touched her cheek.
Lulu sat by the window and stared hard at Lucky. She was trying to remember what he looked like. ''You can watch me from heaven. But don't watch all the time.'' Lulu's eyes grew wide with concern.
Lucky eyes showed amusement. ''I promise I won't watch you every second of the day.'' Satisfied with this answer, Lulu nodded in agreement.
''Don't have too much fun up
there. You had all the fun down here living on the run.'' Lulu pouted.
One of the things she hated most about living in Port Charles was that
it meant her
family wasn't running anymore.
''You can run away right here in Port Charles. If you go down to the Catacombs and go towards where it is completely dark there is a sort of garden entrance that you would love.'' Lulu grinned and hugged her brother's weakened body.
Lulu lay snuggled under the covers. ''I'm going to miss you.'' The tears began to flow down her cheeks.
Lucky touched her shoulder. ''I'm going to miss you too. Grow big, okay? Get dad to teach you how to beat the crap out of people in poker. Grow your hair back.'' His hand ran over her shaved head.
Lulu inched closer to Lucky. ''I like my head shaved.'' She ran her hand over his shaved head feeling the fuzziness of it. She looked towards the window. It was raining.
Lulu started to go and close the window when Lucky stopped her. ''I want to watch it. Can you help me up?'' Lulu stood up and climbed to the other side of the bed. She pulled a switch on the bed making it raise Lucky to a semi-sitting position.
She snuggled back under the covers
with Lucky. ''Don't cause too much trouble in heaven. Who knows what mood
god will be in.'' She watched Lucky. His eyes were staring intently on
the rain.
Lucky grinned slightly. ''I won't. You don't be too much trouble on earth.'' He looked at his little sister. They both laughed. Being a Spencer meant to stir up trouble just so you wouldn't be bored.
Lucky stopped laughing and continued to look out the window at the rain. He felt his little sister's hands around him, her body on his chest. ''I love you Lucky.'' She kissed him.
Lucky leaned his head a little and kissed the top of her head, then her cheek. ''I love you too, Lulu.'' Then he leaned back and they silently watched as the raindrops fell.
After about an hour the rain stopped and Lulu turned to look at Lucky. His eyes were closed. His face peaceful. The rain had come to get Lucky and it did.
Lulu got up and put the covers
around her big brother. She gave him a kiss on the cheek, then watched
him for awhile. Then she turned and looked out the window. Sunlight was
coming and a little blue butterfly flew in the window. Lulu held her hand
out and the butterfly landed on her finger.
