Nik has no girlfriend, but he is beginning to have feelings for Emily.
Lucky is aware of this and he
begrudgingly approves. Lucky is living in the boxcar, but it
is bare and unpainted. Lucky, Nik, and Emily
suspect Mr. Murty of raping Em for all the same reasons that Elizabeth
suspected him on the real GH.
Sarah was never in PC.
All is the same at the Quartermaine household, except that Emily has
been forbidden to see Lucky. No one
there knows about the rape. Alexis and Ned are together, although
she still lives at the PC hotel.
Mulder arrived at Scully¹s house sporting all black attire.
He slipped in through one of the rear windows.
He headed straight for her bedroom, and found that it was surprisingly
feminine. There was even a nice
floral fragrance in the air. He liked that, of course he liked
everything about her. She was even alluring
earlier today when she¹d nearly had him thrown out of the building.
Scully¹s intelligence and conservative
demeanor was just as sexy to him as Scarlet¹s helpless femininity
and overt sexuality.
Mulder looked at the pictures on the bedside table. One contained
a dark-haired, middle-aged woman who
obviously had Scully¹s eyes, and who bore a significance resemblance
to Scully. Also in the picture was
Scully and a third woman who also had red hair and resembled Scully,
but was obviously not her twin.
Mulder took the picture out of the frame and flipped it over, it read,
"Mom, Missy and Me". <Who the hell
is Missy?> he thought. There were lots of photos around
the bedroom, the living room, and the den. All of
them had different combinations of these three women at various different
ages. Sometimes there
was a man at varying different ages included, who Mulder quickly identified
as Scully¹ father. None of them
contained a picture of Deanna/Scarlet. <Hmmm,
this is weird.> he thought.
Just then a thought occurred to him. Mulder got up, went over
to the table where the phone sat and picked
up the residential pages. There was no Deanna Scully listed,
but there was a Dana Scully and a Melissa
Scully, whom he assumed was affectionately referred to as ŒMissy¹.
He then went back into the bedroom and started looking through Scully¹s
closet. There was a wealth of
very conservative suits, slacks, and blouses. These Scully type
clothes only took up about half of the closet,
the other half was dominated by very skimpy, revealing Scarlet type
garments. <Oh my God!> Mulder
thought, <Scully and Scarlet are one in the same. That¹s
why the Spencer kid had never heard of her. It
was the only explanation that made sense. Her real sister was
probably Melissa, and this Scarlet person
didn¹t even exist.>
Now the foremost thoughts on Mulder¹s mind were <Where
was Missy now? What had happened to her?
And why the hell was Scully impersonating her non-existent twin?
She didn¹t appear to be crazy.> Just
then he heard a car pulling up outside. He immediately checked
his watch, <Damn! I didn¹t mean to stay
here that long.>
Mulder quickly slipped into the hall closet. Scully came in a
minute later. She went into the bedroom and
immediately went to her closet. She pulled out one of her Scarlet
outfits and layed it out on the bed, while
she went into the bathroom. A minute later he heard water running.
Mulder took this opportunity to slip
outside into the backyard. He had a pretty good idea about where
she was going. Unless he missed his
guess, "Scarlet" would be paying him a visit tonight.
He was almost safely away when he heard a dog yepping at his heels.
Where the hell had that mut come
from? He tried to shake it off while he climbed the gate, but
the damn dog still had a death-grip on his
socks.
Scully¹s back door opened suddenly, and she shouted,
"Queequeq, come here sweetie. Come in and visit
me for a while." With that, she began to come further out in
search of the dog.
<Oh Shit!> Mulder thought. He was half-way over the gate
by this time. He quickly reached down and
yanked the dog off his leg, and tossed him down to the ground as gently
as possible. This quick action
caused him to lose his balance and fall the rest of the way over the
gate. He landed in a heap on the ground.
<Geez, the things I do!> In the distance, he heard
Scully cooing, "Good dog, good, good, good doggie."
He quickly walked back to the main road and called a cab on his cell.
He debated on whether or not to go
to Dr. Jones¹ place. He knew that ŒScarlet¹ would be
knocking at his door pretty soon. <Would she
wait, or would she leave if she came and found him out?> he asked
himself. In the end, he decided to go
over to the Jones¹ take a quick look and then head back to the
hotel to deal with little miss ŒScarlet¹. She
would just have to wait.
About 30 minutes later, Mulder arrived at Tony¹s appartment.
He quickly picked the lock and went inside.
<I guess I¹ll start in the bedroom> he thought.
Mulder checked under the bed first, nothing, then in the
closet, nothing. Next was the hall closet, again nada.
He slowly made his way through the living room,
the kitchen and the bathroom. He looked in every corner, every
crevasse, everywhere, and still he came up
with nothing. He began to give up, thinking, <Hmmm.
Maybe I was wrong. This place is as clear as a
whistle.>
With that thought he made his way back outside, pulled out his cell,
and then he had an epiphany. <The
Car!> he thought, <It¹s in the car.>
He made his way around the back of the parking lot, trying to recall
the description of the good doctor¹s car
from the report he¹s read. He found the car with a no hassle,
and was eternally grateful it was in a fairly
isolated area. He wasted no time in picking the lock on the trunk.
He saw a spare, a car jack and other mechanical essentials. He
also spotted a black plastic bag. <Bingo!>
he thought. He picked up the bag, opened it up, and looked
inside. "OH MYGOD!" He exclaimed.
Meanwhile at the hospitalŠ.. (This is happening at the same time as Mulder¹s little adventure)
Lizzie B. stood outside of Lucky¹s hospital room door nervously
contemplating what to do next. She
wanted so much to see him, but she was unsure of how to act.
<Should I be blasé, I mean it¹s not like he asked
me out. He just asked me to meet him. That could mean
anything. Or maybe I sure try to be alluring, like a femme fatale.
I mean after all, why would he deliberately
hide his invitation from the Boss if he just wanted to ask me a friendly
favor.>
In the end, she just decided to play it cool, and see what happened.
She pushed the door open to find
Lucky in a rather heated discussion with his aunt.
"Aunt Bobbie, you know from personal experience how over protective
they can be. Please, I can¹t stay in
here any longer." Lucky said longingly.
"Now Lucky, you know that I promised your mom that I would make sure
you obeyed the doctor¹s orders,
and the doctors want to keep you one more day. It¹s just
24 hours, can¹t you wait until then?" she pleaded.
"No, I¹m A.W.O.L. as of tonight. I have to be some place." He said.
"What could be more important than your health?" Bobbie asked.
Just then Elizabeth deliberately cleared her throat. "Uh, Hi" she said.
"Great, you¹re right on time." Lucky said to Elizabeth, then
he turned to his aunt, "Trust me Aunt Bobbie, if
it wasn¹t important I wouldn¹t ask you to lie. It not
even a lie really just don¹t let on that I checked out a day
early, okay?" he said tentatively, letting her think that
Elizabeth was the reason for his early departure.
"Well, okay but you make sure he takes it easy young lady."
Bobbie said to Elizabeth. With that she left,
giving Lucky a wink over Elizabeth¹s head
"Sure thing, mame" Elizabeth absentmindedly called after her.
"Man that was close. I don¹t think she would have agreed
if you hadn¹t given me that idea. Thanks, I
needed to lose my parents for a few hours." Lucky said,
looking at her intensely.
Lucky continued looking at her for a minute before he said, "Listen,
I don¹t really know why I asked you to
meet me here. I just knew that I had to see you again."
"It¹s okay, I wanted to see you again too." Elizabeth
admitted shyly. "So why are you trying to elude your
parents? Are they having you watched or followed or something?"
she asked tentatively
"Probably, I¹m not sure. Listen, I have to meet with Nik
pretty soon, but it shouldn¹t take long. I¹d cancel,
but it¹s about Em. Why don¹t you join me, and then
we can hang out afterward." Lucky suggested.
"Okay," she agreed eagerly.
With that they left, took an evasive route and headed for the boxcar.
Nik was waiting for Lucky when they
got there. He seemed up-nerved by Lizzie B.¹s presence.
"I was surprised to hear from you so soon. Over the phone you
said they weren¹t letting you out until
tomorrow." Nik said.
"Change of plans." Lucky said shortly, "Nik, I¹d like
you to meet Elizabeth. Elizabeth meet my
half-brother, Nikolas. Elizabeth is an assistant P.I. working
on solving the PC murders."
"A P.I., Lucky? I thought we were supposed to be keeping this quiet?" Nik said looking at Lucky crossly.
"Chill out, man! Elizabeth is part of the reason I wanted to see
you. Her and her boss, Mulder came to ask
me a few questions about the attack, and in the course of answering
them they caught me in a lie. I had to
tell them about our meeting that night, including the plans, and the
rape. Which means that you should be
expecting a visit from Mulder. He wants to get your version of
what happened that night, the real version I
mean, not the one we amended. Kay?" Lucky explained.
At this point, Nik addressed Elizabeth, "This is all confidential
right? I mean, you can understand why Emily
doesn¹t want it to get out."
"The Boss and I have already promised Lucky that we have no intention
of telling anyone. It¹s not even in
my report of Lucky¹s statement. The Boss had me delete that
paragraph entirely." Elizabeth reassured him.
"I just want to make sure that Emily¹s not hurt anymore than she
already has been." Nik sighed. "That
reminds me, Emily wants to know how you¹re doing Lucky.
I won¹t tell her that you decided to check out
of the hospital against the doctor¹s wishes. If you
have a relapse she¹ll blame herself. She already feels
responsible for your attack. I tried to reassure her."
Nik said
"Yeah, I tried to call and tell her that it wasn¹t her fault, but
Edward wouldn¹t even let me speak to her. He
said that they don¹t want her hanging out with a thug with me."
Lucky finished sadly.
At this point Elizabeth moved closer to Lucky, put her arms around his waist, and gave him a hug.
Nik shook his head, and thought about trying to comfort Lucky too, but
instead he said. "You know her
parents wouldn¹t even let her come down to the hospital to see
you. She pleaded with them, but they still
refused. That¹s when she asked me to check on you for her."
"It¹s just as well, she would have freaked when she saw the bruises
on my neck anyway. I know you¹ve
going over there later, so just tell her I¹m fine and that I don¹t
blame her." Lucky said. "And make it sound
convincing so she won¹t worry too much."
"Sure. Well, I can see that you two have plans so, I¹ll be
going now. Lucky, call me tomorrow and we can
start setting up another plan." Nik said as he turned to
leave.
"Wait!" Lucky said a little too loudly.
Nik turned around and looked at Lucky, "Look man, I know
I should¹ve said something before, but well
that was before you turned out to be such an almost okay guy."
<Okay here goes> Lucky thought.
"Thank you for what you¹re doing for Emily. Her face lights
up when she talks about you, and even though I
can¹t say that I feel the same way, I also can¹t say that
I hate you anymore." Lucky continued aimlessly,
"Okay here¹s the thing, I didn¹t know her that well
but she meant a lot to you, so IŒm sorry." Lucky
finished sheepishly.
"Sorry about what Lucky?" Nik asked.
"Kat." Lucky said simply. Nik nodded his head
sadly in reply and left. Elizabeth and Lucky just stood for
a minute, still loosely arm in arm.
"Man, that was deep." Elizabeth sighed.
Chapter 7
Scully has a permanent house in PC, and an apartment in Washington D.C.
There is a gazebo on the Quartermaine estate, where Nik and Em like
to hang out. Alan is not, nor was he
ever a druggie.
<Damn!> Mulder thought, <I hate being the bearer of
bad news >. If what he had discovered in the back
of Tony Jones¹s car was what he suspected it was, he would definitely
be the messenger of ill tidings.
<I¹d better get the contents of the bag tested before I started
accusing the good doctor of unspeakable
acts.> Mulder thought absent-mindedly as he was on his
way back to the hotel.
<I¹ll just swing by the coroner¹s office in the morning
and have Scully run a bloodŠ.> He trailed off as he
suddenly remembered, <Ah, hell, Scully, Scarlet! I still
have to deal with her, uh them, when I get back.>
<As if I don¹t have enough problems.> he thought exhaustedly.
Just then the cab pulled up in front of the PC Hotel. "It¹s
going to be a long night." he muttered as he
swung his legs out of the cab.
When he arrived at the door to his and Lizzie B.¹s suite he paused
and took a deep breath, before finally
unlocking the door. He walked into the room to find Scarlet,
in all of her splendor, draped lazily over the
sofa like a throw. Only, this time she wasn¹t alone.
The cutest little red-haired pooch shared the sofa with her.
Mulder rolled his eyes and muttered, "We
meet again."
The dog seemed to recognize him too, because it got up, walked over
to Mulder, sat down and looked up at
him expectantly.
"He likes you." Scarlet said softly.
"Just what I need, another red-head in my life." Mulder said sarcastically.
"Why don¹t you come over here and keep me company, I¹m beginning to get lonely." She purred.
"First, why don¹t you tell me what the hell is going on?" he demanded.
"Why, I¹m sure I don¹t know what you mean, Mr. Mulder?"
she said innocently, "I¹m just here for a status
report on my case. I noticed that you were upset when you came
in, so I compassionately offered you a
shoulder to cry on."
"Don¹t play innocent with me, Red or should I call you Scarlet,
or maybe, Scully perhaps, or any number of
other aliases that you go under." Mulder tossed at her
angrily, "What¹s with the act?"
Ignoring the question she replied, "I see you¹ve met
my straight-laced older sis." She said "Don¹t
fret, her
boredom grows on you after a while"
"The gig is up, Red." Mulder said softly as he began to move closer to the sofa followed closely by the dog.
"I know." He said simply
She gave no outward indication that she heard what he said, but she
asked, "And what is it that you think
you know about me, Mr. Mulder?"
"That your real name is Dana Catherine Scully, and that you¹ve
been impersonating your non-existent
identical twin, Scarlet." Mulder said softly, still walking
toward the sofa.
"Sorry, Foxy, but I think you must have me confused with Clark Kent and Superman," She said playfully.
Mulder was now standing directly in front of the sofa on which she was
lounging, with Queequeq looking on
from beside him.
He was reluctant to reveal to her where he¹d been earlier, but
he didn¹t see any other choice. "There is no
Deanna Scully. I was there, Scully. I saw you." Mulder
said cautiously.
Her stance didn¹t change but a flash of doubt came into her eyes,
"I have no idea what you¹re talking
about." She said nervously.
"The photo. It said ŒMom, Missy, & Me¹,"
Mulder said softly as he began to kneel down in front of her,
"Who¹s Missy, Scully?"
"Don¹t!" she said as both her resolve and her voice broke at the same time.
Mulder, unable to stop himself, pulled her into his arms and joined
her on the sofa, "Why, Scully?" he said
softly as if he were speaking to a child.
She didn¹t struggle. She simply lay in his arms and cried
softly into his shoulder, "Because, I miss my
sister." she said in a broken little voice.
Mulder began gently stroking her hair. "Tell me about her. It might help if you talk about it." He suggested.
She pulled back, looked up into his eyes, and said, "They
found her dead, in my apartment with a cranial
gun-shot wound, about 7 or 8 months ago. I miss her so much.
That¹s why I volunteered to work on the
investigation into the PC murders, I thought it would take my mind
off Missy. It didn¹t, so I created Deanna,
my troublesome twin who also goes under Scarlet." She stopped
momentarily to gauge his reaction.
"Isn¹t that just the craziest thing you¹ve ever heard of?"
Scully said in a self-mocking little voice, "A grown
woman with an imaginary friend."
"No, as a matter of fact I don¹t." Mulder said compassionately,
"My sister was abducted when I was
12yrs old, and I can honestly say that I¹ve never gotten over
it."
Scully looked at him with new eyes. She smiled, laid her head on his chest, and said, "Tell me about her."
Queequeq looked at them rather oddly and thought, <Humans!,
what a drag.>
Meanwhile at the boxcarŠŠ (Again these events are happening at the same time)
Lucky was reluctant to move, he liked feeling her arms around his waist.
Elizabeth spoke first, "So, where do you stay, if you don¹t live with your parents?" she asked.
He stalled as long as he could and then turned to her and said playfully, "Welcome to my humble abode".
Elizabeth looked at Lucky in confusion. "What do you mean, Œyour humble abode¹?" she asked.
"I live here" he announced with a grin.
"Are you kidding me?" she said incredulously.
"Nope." He returned.
"Well, you can¹t stay here tonight." Elizabeth said matter-of-factly.
"And why not," he inquired.
"Because, you just got out of the hospital, not to mention that the
flu you had could still develop into
pneumonia. Besides, I promised your Aunt Bobbie that I would
take care of you for the next twenty -four
hours, and that means that you are not sleeping in a boxcar exposing
yourself to the chilly night air. Okay?"
she said, her voice ringing with finality.
"Where exactly would you have me sleep?" Lucky asked good-naturedly.
"With me, of course," she said. "Well, not with me, I mean
uh, there are two twin beds in my hotel room."
She finished lamely.
When he didn¹t answer right away she continued, "Please
Lucky, I don¹t want you to get sick, besides, I
want you with me." She finished shyly.
Lucky looked at her deeply. <God, she¹s beautiful.>
he thought "I want to be with you too, but what¹s
your Boss going to think, Elizabeth?" Lucky asked, concerned
in his eyes.
"Let me worry about the Boss Man. You, just go get your stuff ready." Elizabeth ordered gently.
"Yes, mame!" Lucky said as he got into the boxcar and began packing.
Meanwhile at the QuartermainesŠŠ
Nik had a lot on his mind while he was driving over to see Emily, mostly
Lucky. <Was Lucky actually
starting to soften towards him or was he just trying to make an effort
for Emily¹s sake?> Nik wondered.
A few minutes later he arrived at the estate. He looked up and saw Emily leaning out of her window.
"Be careful Em." He yelled up at her.
She giggled and gave him a wave that said she would meet him in the gazebo.
He took his time walking, knowing that it would take her a few minutes
to get down there. When she
arrived, Emily wasted no time in asking how Lucky was doing.
"Hello, Em," Nik said sarcastically.
"Oh! I¹m sorry I didn¹t mean tooŠ uh Hi, Nik. How are you?" Emily amended quickly.
At that Nik laughed and said, "He¹s fine Emily. The
doctors are letting him out tomorrow. I¹m sure that¹s
enough warning, for you to start planning on how you can sneak out
to see him, right?"
Emily looked at Nik guiltily, "I just want to make sure
that he¹s alright. I mean after all if he hadn¹t been
helping me, he¹d have never been hurt in the first place."
Emily lamented.
"Don¹t. Don¹t blame yourself. Lucky doesn¹t" Nik said softly, "He told me to tell you that, you know."
"Yeah, in my mind I know that¹s true, but I just keep thinking if it hadn¹t been forŠ."
"Shhhh" he said as he put his finger to her mouth, "No more of that, Okay?"
"Okay." She said demurely.
Just then he took notice of her lips. <Man, she¹s beautiful>
he thought.
As if she read his thoughts, she said, "It¹s okay, I feel
it, too"
"What gave me away?" Nik said with a sigh.
"Lucky," she replied.
"Oh" he said looking down.
Music from the "City of Angels" soundtrack begins to play. ŒIris¹, by the Goo, Goo Dolls.
Nik and Emily were sitting very close to one another. Emily leaned
over and kissed Nik on the cheek. He
looked up, and saw a longing in her eyes that he couldn¹t ignore.
He closed the small distance between
them, and kissed her gently.
And I¹d give up forever to touch you
ŒCause I know that you feel me somehow
You¹re the closest to heaven that I¹ll ever be
And I don¹t want to go home right now.
The scene switches over to Elizabeth¹s hotel room, where, she and
Lucky are having a playful pillow fight in
their pajamas.
And all I can taste is this moment
And all I can breath is your life
ŒCause sooner of later, it¹s over
I just don¹t want to miss you tonight.
And I don¹t want the world to see me
Cause I don¹t think that they¹d understand
Why everything¹s made to be broken
I just won¹t you to know who I am.
Mulder is lying on his back on the sofa with a sleeping Scully curled
up on his chest. Mulder is stroking her
hair as he watches her sleep.
And you can¹t fight the tears that ain¹t coming
Or the moment of truth in your lies
When everything feels like the movies
Yeah you bleed just to know you¹re alive.
Nik and Emily have fallen asleep in the gazebo.
And I don¹t want the world to see me
Cause I don¹t think that they¹d understand
Why everything¹s made to be broken
I just won¹t you to know who I am.
Lucky and Elizabeth are lying down in twin beds facing each other.
Lucky reaches his hand over to her,
which she meets with her own.
And I don¹t want the world to see me
Cause I don¹t think that they¹d understand
Why everything¹s made to be broken
I just won¹t you to know who I amŠŠ
Chapter 8
The Morning AfterŠ
Mulder awoke slowly, to find that he and Scully were still on the couch.
He looked at her to make sure she
was still sleeping. His felt something furry move along his skin,
and he glanced down to discover that
Queequeq was snuggled up against his hand. Mulder leaned back
and sighed peacefully, unwilling to let the
reality of the bloody clothes interrupt his happiness.
<A couple of more hours wouldn¹t make a difference> Mulder
thought, trying to convince his business self
to let his personal self enjoy the moment. <You¹re stalling
and you know it. You just don¹t want to be the
one to tell that poor girl that a long time family friend and physician
of her family is also the same person who
brutally raped her.> he conscience told him.
<Well, look on the bright sideŠ.> he thought <Hell!
There is no bright side. The fact is Tony Jones raped
Emily. And as soon as he ran forensic reports on the bloody
items he found he¹d be able to prove it.>
Thirty minutes later, Mulder finally decided that it was time to face
the music. He regretted having to wake
Scully. She looked so peaceful. With that last fleeting
thought, he moved to get up. Scully, stirred but she
didn¹t wake up.
He began to stand, taking her along with him. She still did not
awaken. Mulder was now fully standing with
a still sleeping Scully in his arms. He walked over to the bed,
pulled back the covers with one hand, and
tucked Scully under them. <Hmmm. She¹s a deep sleeper.>
he silently realized. He liked that. He liked
knowing that about her.
He then went over to the table and wrote her a note, with that he headed
over to Lizzie B.¹s room. He
knocked on the door, and waited a few minutes before he tried again.
<Hmmm. That¹s strange, she¹s
usually a very light sleeper.> he thought to himself. He
was beginning to worry. Had she come back at all?
He didn¹t remember hearing her come in, but then again he
was otherwise occupied last night.
He decided to chance it and use his key to open the door. Once
inside, he was both shocked and amused
at what he saw. Lizzie B and Lucky were both sound asleep, their
hands still linked together, resembling a
bridge that connected the two beds. Mulder decided to give them
a couple of more hours of peace.
He eased slowly back out of the room and went for a walk.
Meanwhile at the QuartermainesŠŠ
"Where the Hell is that granddaughter of mine? She had better
not be with that thug she calls a friend.
Whoever heard of a teen-ager living on the street when he has
a perfectly good roof to sleep under."
Edward rambled to no one in particular.
He turned to find Alexis coming into the room. "And just
what the hell are you doing here this early in the
morning?" Edward asked viciously, "Whatever
it is, don¹t expect overtime."
Alexis rolled her eyes in reply. "I¹m here to see Ned, do you know where I can find him?"
"Right here, Lexy." Ned said as he came into the room.
He immediately walked over to Alexis and gave
her a kiss on the cheek.
"Oh brother, I think IŒm going into sugar shock." Edward
muttered. "Forget about your romantic liaisons.
Emily is missing, and there is a mad killer on the loose!"
Concerned Ned asked, "What do you mean, Œshe¹s missing¹. I just saw her last night"
Just then Alexis chimed in, "Actually, that¹s why I¹m
here. Nikolas didn¹t come home last night, and the
last time I saw him, he said he was coming over here to visit Emily."
"Oh! Hell. Will someone do something. We¹ve already
lost A.J. I won¹t have Emily being that killer¹s next
victim." Edward lamented sadly.
Everyone began to talk at once. Just then, a sheepish Nik and
Emily appeared in the doorway to the
courtyard.
"We fell asleep in the gazebo last night. Sorry, everybody." Emily said apologetically.
"And just what were you two doing in the gazebo that late at night anyway." Edward demanded.
"Oh Shut Up, Edward!" Monica, Alan and Ned said in unison.
"Emily, why don¹t you head off to school. Just because this
is your last year doesn¹t mean you should start
cutting classes." Monica said.
"Nikolas, Stephan was very worried about you, especially now with Katherine¹s.Š..
" Alexis trailed off "In
the future, please try and be a little more considerate of his feelings."
"I¹m sorry. We lost track of time." Nik said
to Alexis. He turned to Emily and said, "I better go.
I don¹t
want to worry my uncle. He¹s been through so much already.
I¹ll see you later, okay?"
"Promise?" Emily whispered quietly.
Nik winked in response as him and Alexis turned to leave.
Back at the PC HotelŠŠ.
Lucky began to stirŠ <What was that awful noise and why wouldn¹t
it stop?> he thought groggily. He
awoke to realize it was Lizzie B.¹s cell phone ringing.
He was about to reach over and wake her when he
realized that they were still holding hands.
Lizzie came awake suddenly. She then looked over at Lucky
in confusion. "Aren¹t you going to get that?"
she asked.
"Elizabeth, that¹s your cell phone." Lucky informed her with a smile.
"Oh, oh yeah." She said as she reached for the nightstand in order
to answer it. "Yeah Boss" she
answered.
"So, I heard you got lucky last night!" Mulder said mischievously
as he walked up to the door of Lizzie B.¹s
room.
"WHAT!" she said as she lost her balance and fell off the bed.
Slowly realizing that he must have seen her
and Lucky together, Lizzie B. said, "You know that¹s
not a very nice thing to do to a person this early in the
morning"
"Wake up and smell the coffee, it¹s not early." Mulder said as he knocked on her door.
Lucky looked at the clock and winced, <It¹s late.> he thought.
"Just a minute, Boss. There¹s someone at the door." Elizabeth said.
"Gee, I wonder who that could be?" Mulder replied.
Elizabeth went to the door, looked out of the peek hole and saw Mulder
standing there. "Very funny, " she
said as she opened the door.
"Listen, all joking aside. I need to talk to you about something, it¹s important." he said seriously.
"I¹ll just take a quick shower, while you guys talk." Lucky said as he headed for the bathroom door.
"No wait!" Mulder said just as Lucky opened the door to the bathroom.
Lucky immediately stopped, but not before they all heard a fourth person moving around next door.
"What was that? Is someone over there?" Lizzie B. said as she turned to look at her Boss.
Just then the adjoining bathroom door opened to reveal a fully dressed
Scully. She was followed closely by
Queequeq, who wasted no time in coming to rest beside Mulder.
Scully also joined them in Lizzie B.¹s
room.
"Looks like I¹m not the only one who got Œlucky¹ last night."
Elizabeth muttered under her breath.
<Hmmm. I thought for sure he¹d go for Scarlet>
Elizabeth mused silently.
Mulder cleared his throat, and continued, "As I was
saying, we need to have a serious talk about what
happened last night." Mulder said.
"With the investigation." he amended quickly, as he saw the sheepish looks everyone was wearing.
He looked directly at Lucky and said, "Stay, this concerns
you, too." He then began, "Last night, after I
left the coroner¹s office I began to wonder where the PC killer
or killers had gotten so much of the sedative
that Scully found in the victims. It occurred to me that Dr.
Tony Jones could have been the supplier, and
after he¹d out-lived his usefulness the killer most likely disposed
of him. It made sense, as a doctor he
would¹ve had unlimited access to the drug. So, I went over
to his apartment last night to have a
look around. I didn¹t find anything in his apartment, but
I did fine a bag in the trunk of his car that contained
a substantial amount of the sedative, as well as a woman¹s bracelet,
a pair of black gloves, and a black ski
mask. All of these items were covered with blood and hair fibers."
He looked over at Lucky as he finished
his explanation.
"Did your friend happen to lose a small charm bracelet during the course
of her attack?" He directed at
Lucky.
"Yeah, she did. No matter how hard we searched for it, we
never found her bracelet." Lucky said with a
sharp intake of breath. "Oh man, and all this time
we¹ve been thinking it was someone else entirely."
Elizabeth moved closer and put her arm around a visibly distraught Lucky.
Leaving out his other nightly activities, Mulder continued,
"That¹s when I contacted Scully. She¹s agreed
to run blood typing against all the murder victims just in case.
Lucky, what I need from you is blood and
hair samples from your friend."
At this point, Scully said, "She doesn¹t have to come
forward if she doesn¹t feel comfortable. I can give
you an at home kit with which she can take a blood sample herself.
And of course she can just obtain hair
samples from her comb or brush. I never have to know her name
or see her face."
"That sounds good. If I can get you the samples this afternoon,
how soon can you have the results of the
test?" Lucky asked.
"Tomorrow morning at the latest. I already went and picked up
a kit this morning." Scully replied. With
that she went into the next room, obtained her medical bag and returned.
She handed Lucky a small bag with a box in it and said,
"Just make sure you follow the instructions exactly.
Bring the samples over to the coroner¹s office when they¹re
ready, and I¹ll get started right away"
"Give me a few hours, okay?" Lucky said thinking of Emily.
"Sure" Scully said compassionately.
"Come on Scully, I¹ll give you a ride to work." Mulder
offered. With that He, Scully, and Queequeq
departed.
"Emily¹s not going to take this well." Lucky said matter-of-factly.
"Why not? It looks to me like her rapist has finally been found, even if he is already dead." Elizabeth said.
"Well, she wanted to confront him, you know. Face him, testify
against him in court, see him go to prison. I
also think it would have been better if she didn¹t know the guy.
Tony was a long time friend of the family,
until ŒMichael¹ that is." Lucky confided.
"Yeah, I saw the story on the news." Elizabeth said. "It
makes me wonder, why a creep like that was
allowed to walk in and out of Emily¹s life whenever he wanted
and a true friend like you is banned from the
premises. How could the Quartermaines be such a bad judge of
character?"
"Man, who knows. Listen, we¹d better get stared. You
take your shower first while I contact Nik and
Emily. She¹ll have to ditch school I guess." Lucky
predicted.
Elizabeth took a shower while Lucky called Nik and Emily and told them
to meet him at the Wyndamere.
Lucky then took his turn in the shower. After they were
dressed, they headed over to Spoon Island.
"Let¹s Roll." Lucky said as they walked out the door.
