Succumbing to the Pressure - 10

Finally Lucky was able to control his crying.  He rose up and wiped his tearstained face.  “God.  I’m sorry Em.  I didn’t mean to unload on you.”
“I seem to be the one who people unload on, so atleast now I can help someone who I’ve unloaded on many times before.”  Emily said, brushing his hair back.
Lucky smiled.  “Do you know how much sense you just did NOT make?”
Emily laughed at him.  “Well, you helped me when I slipped up and smoked again, so I returning the favor.”
Lucky pulled back and looked at Emily.  He stood up.  “Well, don’t feel obligated.  I can take care of myself.”  He said bitterly.
“Wait.  Hold on.  What just happened?  Lucky, why are you mad?”
“Look, you don’t owe me anything….”
“No!  That’s not what I meant.  It’s just, well, I saw you were headed to a bad place, and I love you Lucky, so I had to try to help.”  Emily touched his arm as she said this.
Lucky softened and sat back down.  “Yeah, I love you too.  That’s why I helped you.  You scared the shit outta me that night.”
“Well, you’ve been scarring the shit outta me for a month.  I’ve come by practically everday, and I’ve called.  Jason told me to go home!  I was like ‘screw you then.’  I don’t think he realized the place you were in.”
“Well, Jas just respected that I would do what I would do anyway.”
“Okay, I guess I get that.  Are you mad at me for getting up here?”  Emily asked, furrowing her eyebrows.
“Nah, guess I kinda needed a reality check.  I’ve kinda fallen into a pattern.”
“Oh yeah?  What pattern is that?”
Lucky looked guiltily at her.  “Wake up, drink.  Have lunch, drink.  Go see dad, drink.  Drink, go to bed.”
Emily shook her head.  “God, I shoulda come sooner.  How could I have been so stupid.  I kept telling myself  ‘He’s okay.  He’ll be okay.’  I shoulda come that night after the hospitol.”
“Emily, don’t beat yourself up.  I’m the one who messed up.  I’m not your responsibility.”
 “No, but you’re my friend.”
“I know” They smiled at each other.

Liz walked by the docks.  Talking to Luke had actually helped.  Even if he couldn’t talk back.  Just looking at Luke made her feel closer to Lucky.  She saw Nichoplas sitting on a bench, looking at Windemere.  “Hey, Nik.”
“Hey Liz” he said, looking up at her smiling.
“So,” she sat down by him, “how ya been?”
“I been better.  But I’m okay I guess.”  Nicholas turned top face Liz.  “How have you been?  You and Lucky were a lot closer than he and I ever were.”
Liz swallowed the lump in her throat.  “Well, I just keep hoping that he’ll come to me.  Ya know, forgive me.”
He grabbed her hands.  “For what?  Because you told Laura Luke was in the hospitol?  That’s assinine.”
 “That’s Lucky.”  Liz shrugged.
Nicholas laughed, turning to the water again.  Yeah, it is isn’t it?”  They both laughed.

Bobby walked into her brother’s room.  She still expected him to pop up and say,  “Well Barbara Jean, had ya’ll goin didn’t I darlin’?!”  But he never did.  “Hello Luke.”  She said, sitting down and taking his hands in hers, bringing them up to her chin.
‘Hello Barbara.’  He said in his mind, cursing cause he knew she couldn’t hear him.
“Well, brother.  When are you coming back to the land of the living?  Lucas misses ya.  Lucky’s pretty ruff, and there’s nothing I can say or do to make him better, I try Luke, I really do.”  She paused to control herself, but a tear falls out.  “I miss you, come back Luke!  Damn you!”
Luke wished he COULD wake up.  To help his sister, to help Liz, to help his son.  God, his poor son.  “Well, brother.  I have to go.  I’m on duty tonight.”  She looked one last time at Luke, willing him to wake up.  But he didn’t.  She stroked his hair and turned and left, her heart feeling like it would break.

We see a very thin, very pretty girl with long blond hair standing at a house.  She is alone.  She bends over and picks up an overstuffed suitcase.  She has tears in her bright blue eyes.  “Goodbye house … goodbye Mother …  goodbye Father … sister … brother.  Goodbye Canada.”  She kisses her hand and lays it on the table in the kitchen.  “Good bye Hell.”  She wipes her tears away and goes outside.  She chunks her suitcase into the back seat of her forest green Blazer and starts the engine.  She backs out of the driveway and her tires squeal as she peels out of the neighborhood.  She turns on the radio.  “How fitting!”  She laughs slightly as the song plays.
