*MAINE IN THE KITCHEN*
They were all sitting around
the kitchen table when it suddenly
occurred to Kelsey that there were some things that needed to be taken
care
of. "Hey, did you guys report the accident? That needs to be done."
"No we didn't," Sly said. "I didn't even think of it."
"They could hardly expect
you to with all that happened. I tell you
what, I'll try to get a hold of Jason or Scott. They'd both be cool
about
it."
"We can't call the police,"
Nikolas said. "I can't explain it right
now, I have to speak to Lucky first, but please, please, don't call
the
police."
Kelsey looked at him in surprise.
"You know that it's a crime not
to report an accident, don't you?"
"No one was killed. If the find the car..."
"When they find the car,"
Sly said. "You did quite a number on the
guardrail. They will check that out. Not all cops are like the PCPD
you
know."
"Okay, when they find the
car, they'll write it off as an
abandonment, or figure that everyone in it was killed and swept away.
There
must have been a strong current there, since Lucky disappeared so quickly.
All I know is that we can't call the police, but I have to talk to
Lucky
before I can even explain to you why."
"It's okay with me," Sly
said. He turned to Kelsey. "I trust their
judgment in this. Will you trust me?"
Kelsey nodded. "I guess that
there was no real damage done. This
doesn't feel quite right, but I'll let it go for the moment." She turned
to
Nikolas. "I know that there's a lot that you're not telling us. Lucky's
refusal to go to the hospital and your unwillingness to call the police.
I
want to know what's going on, but I won't press you. Just let me know
if
there's anything that I can do."
Nikolas and Emily nodded.
They didn't know if they should tell her
why they were running or not. The fact that she wouldn't push them
made
them feel better about the whole thing.
"Another thing that I was
wondering was where all of you were going
to stay."
"At my place," Sly said. "Why?"
"How were you expecting to
fit all these people in the little place
of yours?" Kelsey asked Sly. "I mean there's barely room for you."
"I didn't have much time
to think about it," Sly said. "Lucky
needed help, and that's all that mattered."
Kelsey nodded. That kind
of loyalty was one of the things she loved
most about Sly. "They can stay with me."
"It's okay Kelse, we'll manage."
"No," Kelsey said. "I insist.
My parents are gone for the summer,
Amy, as you know, moved to Augusta and only comes down on the weekend.
The
house is huge and there's nobody there but me. I would enjoy the company.
You could come to. My parents won't care. The more the merrier. Darcy
was
planning to move in anyway, her parents are driving her crazy. It'll
be
fun."
"Sounds good to me," Lucky
said from the doorway. He hadn't been
able to sleep for very long. There was too much on his mind. Liz had
woken
up soon after him and they had decided to join the others in the kitchen.
"How far away is it?"
"Oh, about ten minutes. We
can go as soon as Darcy gets back, which
should be soon. We can all go over together, and Sly, you can decide
if you
want to come later. Darcy will want to, for sure. She's so sick of
her
parents it's not even funny."
"It can't be that bad. What's wrong with them?" Nikolas said.
"Lack of freedom, I guess.
Her parents are a little overprotective.
Mine are way relaxed, so she sees that I'm allowed to do pretty much
anything and it annoys her. She's allowed to stay with me even though
my
parents are away, so it's a way of getting freedom without having to
fight
for it."
The Port Charles teens looked
at each other. That seemed like such
a small thing to worry about, one that they would gladly take over
the ones
that they had faced. They had forgotten what it was that normal teens
thought about.
"So what's your house like?" Lizzie asked.
Kelsey was about to answer
when the door slammed open. "Hey
everybody," Darcy said, walking into the kitchen with two young boys
at her
heels.
"Oh, I had completely forgotten
that it's Deb's shopping day,"
Kelsey said as the younger of the two ran up to her. "Hi, Will. How're
you
doing?"
"Good. Will you flip me Kelse, please? Please?"
"Sure kido," she said flipping
him up onto her shoulder and then
down into her arms for a hug. Will was about four years old. His brother
John was six. Darcy babysat for their boss, Deb, most of the time and
shopping days were longer than most. She often brought them home with
her
on those days.
"I see that you found Sly,"
Darcy said. "And I take that everyone
made it through the crash unharmed."
"Yeah," Sly said. "We were
quite worried about Lucky for a while
though, but he lived up to his name like usual. Kelsey has decided
to have
everyone stay at her house. We've been told that you're coming."
"Boy would I ever like that,"
Darcy said. "My parents are driving
me crazy."
"I was going to bring them
over as soon as you got here. I want to
show them around."
"We'll come with you. You
know that the boys love exploring your
house."
"Okay, great," Kelsey said. "Let's go!"
They headed out of the house
and piled into two cars. Kelsey piled
Sly, Lucky, Lizzie, Nikolas and Emily into her family van and Darcy
took
the boys in her car after making a quick phone call.
They pulled out of the driveway
and were startled at the speed that
Kelsey was driving. The roads in the town of Brooksville are like snakes.
The locals tend to take the corners at speed that tend to make anyone
that
isn't used to the roads very nervous. The speed sometimes feel physically
impossible to those that aren't used to it. "Hey, Kelse," Sly said,
noticing the white faces of the other kids in the car.
"Yeah?"
"Maybe you should slow down a little."
"Oh yeah," Kelsey said.
"I forgot that we had straps in the car."
She slowed her speed. "Sorry about that. I forget how these roads affect
people that aren't used to them."
"What's a strap?" Emily asked.
"Oh, sorry about that too,"
Kelsey said. "It's what we call
tourists. I'm not sure exactly where it came from, but I think that
it has
something to do with subways. You know, how they used to have straps
instead of bars and people hang off of them. That's what I've heard
anyway."
"Interesting," Lucky said. "So what are people from Maine called."
"Mainers or Mainiacs, however
in order to be considered a Mainer,
you have to have been born here. My mother moved here when she was
one and
she's still not considered a native. That's just the way that people
think
around here."
The had been driving for
a while when they turned onto a dirt road
and drove for about a half a mile. They then came to another dirt road,
this one marked by an old iron gate. The road twisted and turned for
about
a mile. The passed orchards and gardens and many blueberry fields before
coming to the house. It sat close to the edge of a cliff, large and
majestic, and in many ways haunting. They all piled out of the car
and
stared at the house before them. "It was built by a Sea Captain," Kelsey
said. She pointed at an tower on the roof, "That's the widows watch,
where
wives would watch for their husbands returns from the sea. Many waited
in
vain for husbands that never returned." The teens gazed up at the house
and
we engulfed by the shear magic that surrounded it. They could feel
the
history of the place. The people and things that had passed through
here
over the years.
"Wow," Lucky said. "This
house is amazing. Hey Nik, I never thought
that I'd be able to say this but it's even spookier than your house."
"Well, I don't know about
that," Lizzie said. "But you can
certainly feel the presence of this place. How long have you lived
here?"
"I've lived here most of
my life. My dad's the oldest of four so he
got the house. My grandparents were tired of looking after it, but
he and
my aunts and uncle grew up here. The house has always been in my family
and
who knows, I might even have some smugglers in the family tree. It's
the
perfect place to arrive undetected. I'm sure that this was a very
interesting place during the twenties. Some of my Great grandfathers
brothers were, let's just say, very opposed to prohibition."
Lucky laughed, "There must
be a lot of great stories that go along
with this place."
"Oh, there are. This house
has been here for well over two hundred
years," Kelsey said. "There are so many stories and legends that go
along
with it that you'd never believe them all, though most of them can
be
backed up with at least a little proof. I'll tell you some of them
a little
later if you'd like."
"Oh, I'd love that," Lizzie said.
"I thought that you hated history," Emily said jokingly.
"I do, but it's so much more
interesting when your at the place
you're talking about, rather that cooped up in a stuffy classroom."
Darcy arrived and they all
walked into the house together. They
were quickly overwhelmed by a haunting melody that played within. A
chill
seemed to hang in the air, even in the direct sunlight. It was definitely
a
spooky place.
The music startled the teens. "What is that?" Emily exclaimed.
"Oh, that's just the ghost," Darcy said innocently.
"Ghost!?"Elizabeth said. "I am not sleeping in a house with a ghost."
Sly laughingly shook his
head at Kelsey and rolled his eyes. "She's
just trying to get a rise out of you. Tom, get out here will you?"
Sly
shouted. "And shut off that music." The music ended abruptly and a
sheepish
old man entered the front hall.
"I'm sorry, Miss. Kelsey.
Miss Darcy called and said you were
coming over with guests. I just wanted to make sure you great grandpop
was
relaxed when you got here. You know he don't like strangers too much.
He
always liked that song."
"So Darcy called you, huh?"
Kelsey said, giving her cousin a look.
"Don't worry about it, Tom. I'm sure that he'll be fine now. Why don't
you
go on home. I'm sure that everything will be fine."
"Thanks miss. I'll do that.
See ya tomorrow." He shuffled quietly
out of the house.
"Your Great grandfather is
here?" Nikolas asked. "I thought that
you said all your family was gone for the summer."
"Oh, Great Grandfather isn't
here, at least not in the physical
sense. You see, Tom believes that my Great Grandfather remains in this
house as a ghost. He worked here for my great grandfather when he was
a
boy. The family was quite wealthy then. Most of the money's gone now,
but
the loyalty remains. Darcy likes to make it sound like there's really
a
ghost to scare people. She does this all the time."
"Hey, you have to admit that
it's funny. The reactions that we get
from some people." Darcy laughed. "Beware the ghost of Horace Grey.
He
shall never sleep, but shall remain here forever, guarding the secrets
of
the Grey Manor."
"Oh, that reminds me. Make
sure that I tell you the hidden treasure
story, that's the best of them all, and it ties into the ghost of my
great
grandfather perfectly." Kelsey was about to say something more when
the
music began to play once more. "Darce, that's getting a little old."
"I had nothing to do with it this time."
"But Tom's gone. Who else would play it?"
"Great Grandfather?"
"Very funny.Would you go
turn it off? I'm going to get them settled
in their rooms. You can have Amy's." Darcy headed off in the direction
that
the music was coming from.
John and Will had been remaining
quietly by Darcy's side until this
point, but now they wanted to start something fun. "Can we explore
the
secret passage to your room Kelsey?" John asked. "We'll meet you up
there,
I promise."
"Sure, but be careful. We'll see you upstairs."
"This house has secret passages?"
Nikolas asked as they headed
upstairs.
"Oh sure. They're all over
the place. Here we are you and Lucky get
this room. Liz and Emily, you're right across the hall. Oh and please,
no
musical rooms. My parents won't mind all of you sleeping here, but
I think
that they'd draw the line at co-ed rooms. Actually, now that I think
about
it, as long as I don't see it, I don't care. Be sneaky and I'll never
know
the difference, not that I mean to imply anything. Just forget that
I said
anything at all. Sorry about that."
Lucky was just about to tell
her not to worry about it when the
haunting cry of a child echoed through the house.
Kelsey was out of
the room in a flash, followed closely by the rest of the group.
Chapter Fifty Seven
Kelsey ran into her room
and directly to the left. When she reached
the wall she banged on an intricately carved design in one of the panels
of
her wall. A small door moved slowly inward to reveal the small form
of
John. "Okay, kido," Kelsey said. "You have exactly five seconds to
tell me
which room you locked him in. If you don't I'll make sure that you
get the
longest timeout *ever*. Do you understand? Here we go. 1...2...3..."
"The little room in the cellar,"
John said petulantly. "And then I
locked it."
"You put him in there and
locked the door?" Kelsey ran into the
passageway, down a flight of stairs, through anther tunnel, down another
flight of stairs and out through a panel, dragging John behind her.
She ran
to a small door from behind which the cry originated. "Will, honey,
it's
Kelsey," She said. "We'll get you out of there before you know it."
The
crying lessened as Will realized that there was someone outside the
door
that could get him out. She turned to John. "You're in big trouble
mister.
Come on, hand over the key." Kelsey said holding out her hand. Just
then
Darcy raced into the cellar.
"What happened?" she asked frantically.
"John locked Will in the preserves room."
"Oh god," Darcy said. Memories
flooded both of their minds but the
pushed them aside. It wasn't the same thing. It couldn't be.
"But he was just about to give me the key, weren't you, John?"
"I guess so," John said,
a sour look on his face. He reached into
his pocket and everyone saw his look of unwilling cooperation change
to one
of genuine fear.
"Please," Kelsey said. "Do not tell me that you lost the key."
John, being a child who takes
things literally, turned to Darcy.
"Darcy, I lost the key."
"John..." Darcy started.
"I know, I know, 'go sit
on the back stairs for a time out.' I'm
going."
"If you knew you'd get punished,
why did you do it? Your mother's
going to be very upset with you, especially if we have a hard time
opening
this door. We're going to go talk about this before your time out."
Darcy
turned to Kelsey. "Can you get him out?"
"Yeah, we'll figure it out."
Darcy left with John after placing a
comforting hand on Kelsey shoulder. Kelsey turned to Sly. "Can you
get me
some tools from my dad's workshop? We'll probably need them." Sly took
off
for the workshop and Kelsey studied the door before her. "I don't think
it'll be that hard to get it open. I just need a few things."
"Kelsey, are you going to
get me out soon?" Will said pitifully
from the other side of the door.
"We're trying honey. Just give us a minute, okay?"
"Okay," Will said softly.
"But please hurry. It's dark in here and
I'm scared."
"Will," Nikolas said. "I'd
like to ask you a few things. Is that
alright?"
"I guess so, but who are you?"
"My name's Nikolas. I'm a friend of Kelsey's."
"Oh, okay." Kelsey looked
at Nikolas gratefully. She really
appreciated his help in distracting Will from his fears.
"Okay, first question. How did your brother get you into that room?"
"He pushed me."
"Oh he did, did he?" Kelsey
said. "Geez, what are we going to do
with that boy?"
"Kelsey?" Will said
"Yeah, kido?"
"Is John in a lot of trouble?
I don't want to get him in trouble, I
just want to get out of this room."
"If he doesn't get in trouble,
then he might do it again. Just how
much time do you want to spend in the room?" Lucky said.
"I don't want to be in here at all. Who are you?"
"My name's Lucky. I'm another friend of Kelsey's."
"You met them all at Darcy's, remember?"
"Oh, yeah," Will said.
"Okay, Will. It's Nikolas
again. Here's my next question. Why did
John push you into the room?"
"Because I wouldn't go in,
even when he called me a scaredy cat."
Will sounded proud of the fact that he had stood up to his older brother.
"Sounds like a typical older
sibling move," Lizzie said. "First you
ask them and then you taunt them and if that doesn't work, you result
to
force."
"Sounds like my sister,"
Kelsey said. "Except she'd taunt me until
I'd hit her and then use that as an excuse to wallop me."
"Sarah used to do something
like that to me," Lizzie said. "Except
that she was such a wimp that the moment I hit her she'd run to mom
and
dad, and I'd get in trouble. That's how it always worked with us."
"Sarah used to taunt you
until you'd hit her?" Nikolas said,
looking at Lucky. Maybe the way that they acted towards each
other in the
beginning wasn't that unusual. It seemed to be a normal thing for siblings
to hate each other for a while. They all seemed to get over it though,
just
as the two of them had.
"Hey, just because someone
looks nice and perfect and all, doesn't
mean that they are." Nikolas shrugged. Sarah had always acted like
she was
the best sister and how Lizzie had acted, (the test answers, the condoms,
you know what I'm talking about:-) had nothing to do with her. It was
interesting to hear Lizzie's side of the story for a change.
Kelsey suddenly realized
that she hadn't heard Will make a sound
from the other side of the door for a while. "Will, are you okay in
there?"
No answer. "Will!?" Still no answer. "WILL!?!?!?!?" There wasn't a
sound
from the other side of the door. "Where is he?" Kelsey said frantically.
"I don't know," Nikolas said. "Will, can you hear me?" Not a sound.
"Sly, where are you?" Kelsey
said softly, more to herself then
anyone else. There were fears running through her head that she kept
carefully in check. 'It's impossible for that to happen,' she thought
to
herself. 'Impossible.'
"Here he is," Lucky said as Sly ran into the room.
"What's up," Sly said.
"Will stopped talking," Kelsey
said. "Here, give me a screw driver.
One of the smaller ones." It was an old door so the doorknob was screwed
on
with a rectangular piece of metal. All that Kelsey had to do was unscrew
the screws, remove the metal rectangle and push the lock mechanism
in order
to open the door. She quickly pulled it open and was horrified to find...an
empty room. "Where'd he go?" Kelsey wailed. "What am I going to tell
Deb.
'I'm sorry, your son is missing somewhere in my house and I can't find
him?' He was right here!" 'It can't happen again, it can't,' the words
raced through her head. It was as if the world was spinning. She heard
Lizzie as if from a distance.
"This place is full of secret
passages right? Maybe Will found one
in this room and went to explore it," Lizzie said. "We'll find him."
"Oh god, there is a secret
passage way out of this room, but I
never thought..." Kelsey ran to a wall and quickly found the mechanism
which opened a small door into the wall, and revealed a long winding
stairway. "It's not...it's not possible," she said, a haunted look
coming
into her eye and her heart beating faster with fear. She shook her
head and
then called into the opening, "Will, can you hear me?" 'Please answer,'
she
thought to herself. 'Please.'
"Kelsey?" came the small voice within. Kelsey let out a sigh of relief.
"Yes honey, stay right where
you are. I'm coming in to get you."
Kelsey walked carefully down the steps until she reached the small
boy. He
was sitting on the stairs his arms wrapped tightly around his knees.
Kelsey
bent down and took him carefully into her arms and carried him up to
where
the others were waiting. Kelsey walked out of the stairway and by the
others without saying a word. It was like she had to get out of the
basement as soon as possible. She quickly led everyone up to the living
room, where she sat down on the couch with Will in her lap. "You gave
me
quite a scare kido. How on earth did you find that passageway?" Her
terror
evident in her voice.
"The door opened so I thought
that you had come around to get me,
but I looked and there was no one there so I looked a little farther
and
then it was so dark and I got scared. I'm sorry Kelsey, I didn't know
that
it was wrong to go in there, I just wanted to get out of that room
so
badly."
"I know, kido." Kelsey took
a deep breath and looked at the small
boy on her lap. "Will, will you do something for me?" Will nodded.
"I want
you to promise me that no matter what, you will never go in that room
again," she said desperately. "Will you do that for me?"
"Sure," Will said. "I don't
want to go down there anyway. It was
creepy."
"Thank you, Will," Kelsey
said giving him a tight hug. "Now go find
Darcy and John. I think that John might have something he needs to
tell
you." Will got down off Kelsey's lap and ran off to find John and Darcy.
Kelsey let a sigh of relief
escape from her. The others looked at
her, wondering what exactly had just happened.
"What's the big deal with
the stairway down there?" Nikolas asked.
"You seem really relieved that he promised not to go there again."
"That stairway leads to the
bottom of the cliffs. A cave. I don't
understand how it opened in the first place," Kelsey said a faraway
look in
her eyes. "My dad boarded it up years ago, after..." She stopped, seeming
to return to the present. "Anyway, it's a very dangerous place. Stay
away
from it, okay?" The other could see tears rising in her eyes. "Um,
I'm
going to go for a ride on Lightning. I'll see you guys later. Make
yourselves at home." She sprinted out of the room as her tears began
to
fall, leaving the others staring after her in shock.
Emily turned to Sly, who
was staring after Kelsey. "What was that
all about?"
"I wish I knew," Sly said.
Darcy came into the room
right after Kelsey ran out. "Hey, guys.
What happened? Kelse just ran out of here like this place was on fire."
"Did Will tell you where he ended up?" Sly said.
"What do you mean?"
'When we opened the door
to the room he wasn't there. It turned out
that the door to a stairway had opened up and that Will had gone in
there."
"That's not possible," Darcy said quietly, almost to herself.
Sly didn't hear her and kept
speaking. "He hadn't gone far, and..."
Sly stopped finally noticing that Darcy's face had gone pale. "What?"
"Where did she go?"
"She said that she was going
for a ride on Lightning. What's going
on?" Sly asked, worried.
"Memories," Darcy said. "That
place. There are so many bad memories
for her there. Kelsey's younger brother, Timmy...Timmy died in that
cave,
five years ago." She cleared her throat. "Kelsey...Well, Kelsey was
the one
that found him," tears came to Darcy eyes. "She was fourteen and she
carried it all. It was a horrible time for all of us, but her
especially.
We used to play in there all the time. No one thought that Timmy would
go
in alone. The tide comes in so fast sometimes. He was in a little room
and
he got trapped. He couldn't figure out how to get out, and she couldn't
get
to him. I don't think she ever really forgave herself for that. She
thought
that she should have been there for him. He was just about Will's age
at
the time. After...Well, afterwards, my uncle boarded up the door from
the
other side and no one ever went near the stairway again, or even spoke
of
it. I...I just don't understand how Will got the door open."
"He said that it opened and
that he thought that we had come around
to get him," Sly said. "I had no idea that she had even had a brother.
Wait, will she be alright out there alone? I mean, what if something
happens?"
"Oh, God, I don't know,"
Darcy said. "She seemed really upset. I'd
go after her, but I have to bring the boys home."
"I'll go after her," Sly said.
"You'd never find her on
foot and there's no way that you could
ride Thunder. I'm not even comfortable riding him. It would be too
dangerous."
"What's the problem with Thunder?" Nikolas asked.
"He's skittish, and it's
like he can tell how much experience a
rider has. He would be as likely to throw Sly as not. He has a mean
streak." Darcy looked torn. She had no idea what to do.
"Look," Nikolas said. "If
you guys are really that worried, I'll go
after her. I've been riding since I was four," (something like that
I'm
sure), "I can handle Thunder."
"Would you?" Darcy said,
relieved. "Thank you," She said, giving
him a hug. "I'll show you the stable's and where everything is and
I'll
hurry back." She hurried them all out to the stable's and showed Nikolas
where everything was. "Now she probably went about two or three miles
down
that path," Darcy said pointing. "When you come to a clearing you might
see
Lightning tethered. There's a little path off to the right that leads
to a
cliff overlooking the ocean. She goes there to think. I hope that she's
there, otherwise..." She shook her head. "I have to bring the boys
back to
Deb and explain what happened. Take care of her. I'll see you soon."
Nikolas saddled Thunder and
rode him easily into the woods, hopeful
that he would find Kelsey in one piece.
He rode for a long time before
coming to the meadow that Darcy had
mentioned. He was relieved to see Lightning tethered and munching happily
on grass. He reined in along side her and swung to the ground. He looked
around and saw the path that Darcy had mentioned and followed it to
the
cliff. That is where he found Kelsey, sitting with her legs hanging
off the
edge of the cliff. Her long dark hair was blowing in the wind as she
stared
out across the ocean. When she heard him approach she said quietly,
"Why
are you here?"
"Everyone's worried about
you. I've been riding for as long as I
can remember so I was sent after you."
Kelsey let out a harsh, ironic
laugh. "It's funny, if I had
*wanted* someone to come after me, *I* would have ridden Thunder. Go
figure
that I would have a guest that's been riding since he was born."
"I can go if you want," Nikolas
said, a little offended. He turned
to leave.
"No," Kelsey said quickly.
"I'm sorry. It's just that...It's just
so hard to deal with, especially if a lot of people are around and
something happens to bring it back so...so vividly. I...I suppose that
Darcy told you what happened?" She said, looking up at him.
Nikolas nodded. "Yes, she,
uh, she said that you're brother had
died in the cave that's at the bottom of those steps. I'm truly sorry."
Kelsey nodded, a slight,
forced smile on her face. "Yeah, everybody
is." A small, self hating laugh broke from her. "Everybody's *sorry*.
Sorry
for me, sorry for my family." She ran her hands over her mouth, "God,
I got
so sick of that word. I know, I know, it's awful, they were just trying
to
help, but it was like...it was like they were apologizing for something
that was my fault."
"Kelsey, I am sure that it
wasn't your fault," Nikolas said sitting
down next to her.
"It feels like it was," Kelsey
said tears streaming down her face.
"I should have been there! I should have done something! I didn't even
know
that he was gone." Her voice broke. "I thought that he was napping.
If I
had only checked on him sooner..." She took a deep breath. "When I
noticed
that he was gone, I looked for him all over the house first. I should
have
known where he went. I should have known. When I finally got to the
cave,
it was too late. It was too late. He screamed for me, but all I could
do
was listen to him. I couldn't *do* anything. I could only listen and
wait
while my baby brother died." She buried her face in her hands and sobbed.
Nikolas watched her for a moment before putting his arms around her.
She
