Crazy for You - 3

Elizabeth slowly woke up and rubbed her eyes. She opened her eyes and found her face staring at an open book lying on her chest. She was confused at first, but then remembered her little lie. She picked up the book and read the page. *Chapter 1: The Basics of Baseball......Page one? I only got to page one? Oh no, I fell asleep before I read anything! Now what am I going to do? Maybe I still have time.* She rolled over and looked at her alarm clock. Panic swept over her. *10:30! It's 10:30! Lucky's going to be here in a half an hour! I have to go get ready! Guess I'll just have to wing the baseball quiz!* She flung her covers off and headed to the bathroom.

Fifteen minutes later, she was out of the shower and in search of the perfect outfit. She eyed the clothes in her closet. *Hmmm...I wonder what you wear to a baseball game? Better question---I wonder what Lucky would like to see me in?* She flipped through her clothes and settled on a low-cut dressy blouse and hip-hugger black pants. *Perfect* She hurriedly put the clothes on, did a quick makeup job and threw her hair up in a ponytail. She smiled in approval at herself in the mirror. Then she heard the doorbell ring and she ran to answer the door.

Liz:(smiling) Hi!

Lucky:(eyeing her outfit) Hi.....uh...is that what you're wearing?

Liz:(frowning) Yeah...why?

Lucky:(grinning) Nothing..it's just that we're going to a baseball game, not a concert.

Liz:(blushing) Oh..Yeah....I'm over dressed, huh?

Lucky: Just a tad.

Liz: Ok, I'll be right back.

Elizabeth ran upstairs to her room. *I am so stupid. He must think I am the biggest idiot.* She sifted thorough her drawers and pulled out a pair of jeans and a gray, long-sleeve t-shirt. She quickly changed and ran back downstairs to Lucky. She smiled and twirled in front of him.

Liz: Better?

Lucky took her in. He realized for the first time that she looked beautiful to him in anything she wore.

Lucky:(smiling) Much.....Let's go.

They left the house and went to the subway station. They got their tokens and got on the subway.

Liz: I've never been on a subway before.

Lucky: Yeah, me neither.

Liz:(raising her brow) Lucky-My-Middle-Name-is-Adventure-Spencer has never been on a subway before. I just can't believe it.

Lucky:(smiling) Hahaha....Anyways, the subway isn't exactly an adventure, Elizabeth.

Liz: Well, it can be, from what I've heard......In the movies, it's always scary with weirdos on it.

Lucky:(laughing) That's the movies. But yeah I think it can be interesting.....Why? Are you scared?

Liz:(defiantly) No! I'm not scared, Lucky Spencer!

Lucky:(smiling and ignoring her protests) 'Cause I'll protect you, don't worry.

Elizabeth smiled at the thought of Lucky protecting her. *I could definitely get used to that!* But she said the opposite of what she thought.

Liz: Well, thank you. But I won't be needing it.

Lucky smiled and nodded. He looked up and noticed that an elderly woman was staring at them from the seat across fromthem. He was about to tell Liz, when the woman spoke to them.

Lady:(sweetly) Hello. ...I am sorry to interrupt, but I just had to say something. I am Ruth Perkins and this (gesturing to an elderly man next to her)..is my husband, Leroy.

Lucky and Liz smiled and nodded. They were about to introduce themselves when the woman continued....

Ruth:(smiling) I just wanted to tell you that I think the two of you are the cutest couple!

Both Lucky and Liz blushed. They were both, although reluctantly, about to set the woman straight when she continued on....

Ruth: I always know two people in love when I see them---The way you two talk and look at each other is a dead give away! I always can tell when two people are meant to be together....isn't that right, Leroy?

Leroy: Yes, dear.

Ruth: You see!

Lucky and Liz didn't have the heart to set the kind woman straight so they thanked her instead.

Ruth: Well, this is our stop! Nice meeting you two..(smiling and shaking her head).....Ah...Young love....Goodbye,dears.

Ruth and Leroy exited the subway. Lucky and Liz turned to each other. Both were delighted by the woman's comments about them, but embarrassed to say anything.

Lucky: Well, she was nice....uh..Imagine....her thinking we were a couple!

Lucky said what he thought he should, but wished that he hadn't. For them to be a couple was what he wanted. He didn't notice the frown that immediately appeared on Liz's face.

Liz: Yeah...Imagine that....I mean we are just friends.

Lucky:(nodding slowly) Yeah...Just friends.....Oh, this is our stop. Hey, you better hold my hand....It's going to be crowded and we could get separated.

Liz smiled and slipped her hand into Lucky's. She reveled in the warmth it provided...and how they seemed to fit perfectly together. Lucky was equally as happy with Liz's touch and absentmindedly rubbed his thumb over her knuckles. He manuevered their way through the crowd and they walked down the stairs. They kept on walking until they were in front of the stadium. Lucky handed Liz her ticket and they entered. Once in they looked for the tunnel that led to their section. Lucky found it and he and Liz walked down. They got to where they could see the entire field. Liz gasped and her eyes brightened at the breathtaking view. Lucky smiled at how beautiful she looked.

Liz:(in awe) Wow, Lucky! This is beautiful! I mean this field is gorgeous!

Lucky:(smiling and nodding) Yeah it is....Let's go sit down.

They found their seats on the third baseline and made themselves comfortable.

Lucky:(grinning) So, now that we are here and have some time before the game starts, how about that quiz?

Liz:(hesitantly) Uh..yeah...sure....of course...ask away.

Lucky: Ok. Let's see. Hmmm. Ok and easy one first. When the hitter hits the ball over the wall, what is it called?

Liz was relieved, she knew this answer.

Liz: A homerun! That was easy.

Lucky:(smiling) Ok....A tougher one. How many balls and strikes in a full count?

Elizabeth bit her lip. She had no idea. But she knew a true baseball fan would answer with ease. She would have to guess.

Liz: Uh..um...three balls and..uh...two strikes.

Lucky:(nodding) Yup, that's right.

She let out a breath. *Good guess, Elizabeth!*

Lucky: Well, this seems too easy for you...So how about a little Yankees' history?

Liz:(slowly) Yeah...sure.

Lucky: Ok. I'll say a name and you tell me what he's famous for........Babe Ruth.

Liz knew she had heard that name before. *I wish I had paid attention to Steven when he watched baseball! Ok, think.....Umm...There's a candy bar named that I think. Maybe that's it.*

Liz: Uh...he's a baseball player that has a candy bar named after him?

Lucky: (laughing) Very funny!

Liz:(smiling awkwardly) Yeah, I was just joking. Uh...he...uh..was a great hitter.

Lucky:(grinning) That's putting it mildly, but yeah......Ok, one more. But this is present stuff. Name a current Yankee.

Liz frowned. She didn't know any current Yankees. *Think. Wait...In my Seventeen magazine...there was that really cute guy...what was his name? ....Derek...Derek Jeter. Yeah that's it!*

Liz:(smiling triumphantly) Derek Jeter!...He's really cute!

Lucky: Ok, yeah he's on the team.....(Frowning a little) You think he's cute, huh?

Lucky took out the scorebook and turned to his picture in it. He pointed to him.

Lucky:(wrinkling his nose) Him?....You really think he's cute?

Liz:(smiling) Oh yeah. Really cute. He's hot!

Lucky:(grinning) Yeah, but not as cute as me, right?

Liz:(smirking) No, not as cute as you...

Lucky:(nodding and smiling) Good I---

Liz:(smiling) Cuter!

Lucky:Oh, very funny! Fine, hurt my feelings!...Two can play this game---I can think of some pretty girls too.

Liz:(batting her eyes) Oh, like me?

Lucky:(smirking) No....like Jennifer Love Hewitt!

Liz:(annoyed) Jennifer Love Hewitt! That bimbo from Party of Five! You like her?!

Lucky:(nodding) Oh yeah. Talk about hot.

Liz:(shrugging) Well, if you like that type....I mean you liked Sarah so I know you have bad taste!

Lucky:(smiling) Ohhh....That hurt!....Ok, just forget it. The game's almost starting....Oh I almost forgot....I wanted to tell you that I'm impressed.

Liz:(raising her brow) Oh yeah, why?

Lucky:(grinning) You managed to pass that quiz, even though you obviously know nothing about baseball.....Very impressive.

Liz:(blushing) Oh...you know...that...I..uh....

Lucky:(nodding) Stretched the truth...Yeah.

Liz:(smiling) So you figured me out.

Lucky:(nodding and smiling at her) Yeah, I think I'm just beginning to.

Liz raised her eyebrows in curiosity at Lucky's statement of just beginning to figure her out. *I wonder what he means by that?*

Liz: What does that mean?

Lucky:(smiling) It means that I'm beginning to see the real you.

Lucky lowered his head as he saw the confused look on Liz's face. *Maybe I better drop this.....No, no I want her to know that I am seeing her differently now....No harm in that, right?* Lucky raised his head and looked at Liz.

Liz: The real me?

Liz wondered if maybe Lucky was starting to see her in a different light.

Lucky:(nodding) Yeah....I mean the you that I've seen lately. You aren't really the wild, uncaring troublemaker you try to make yourself out to be.

Liz:(surprised) I'm not?...I mean, yeah, I'm not.

Lucky:(laughing) I mean you even introduced yourself to me as Uma Thurman!

Liz:(smiling) Yeah, I remember...(lowering her voice)...I guess I have always tried to act tough.

Lucky:(quietly) But you're not....I mean your strong....but not the bad girl you try to be....I can see that now.

Liz:(grinning) Well, I'm not a goody-to-shoes like Sarah, but I'm not a wicked witch either.

Lucky smiled and nodded. Liz continued....

Liz:(looking down and quietly) I guess I was just always trying to be different from Sarah....to make people notice me sometimes, too.

Lucky:(smiling) Yeah, I guess so....But I like this Elizabeth better.

Liz:(raising her brow) This Elizabeth?

Lucky:(softly) Yeah....you aren't so pushy. You don't act like nothing matters to you....I don't know, you just seem different.

Liz:(blushing) Well, that's good....I mean I never really liked the person I tried to be......The real me, as you put it, suits me just fine.

Liz smiled. *This is great! Lucky is seeing the real me! Just like I had hoped! ......Things really have changed between us......I guess, without me noticing, I've let him see the kind of person I can be....The kind of person I want to be.*

Lucky was grinning. *Well I did it!...Now she knows that I don't think of her in the same way anymore.....This is good.....This is a step in the right direction.*

Lucky: Hey, the game's starting.

Liz: Yeah, it is.

They both stood for the national anthem and then watched as the game began.

Lucky: Hey, do you want something to eat?

Liz:(smiling) Yeah....Uh, a hot dog.

Lucky:(pointing) Oh there's a hot dog vendor over there.

Lucky waved and yelled to the man, to no avail. He didn't notice him. All of the sudden he heard a shrill whistle. He turned to Liz who was removing her fingers from her lips and now yelling....

Liz: Hot dog!

The vendor immediately looked in their direction and headed towards them.

Lucky:(smiling) Wow. Where did you learn how to do that?

Liz:(shrugging) I don't know. Just do....(smiling)...Comes in handy.

Lucky:(nodding) I guess so.

The vendor came over to them and handed them two hot dogs with mustard. Lucky paid him and watched amusedly as Liz took a huge bite out of her hot dog.

Lucky:(smiling) I guess you were hungry.

Liz: Yup, I'm starving.

Lucky noticed that in Liz's haste to eat her hot dog, she had gotten mustard on her cheek. He smiled and motioned at his cheek for her to remove it.

Liz:(curiously) What?...Why are you doing that?

Lucky:(pointing at the spot) Because you have mustard on your cheek.

Liz blushed embarassedly and swatted at it with her napkin. She succeeded....in making it worse.

Liz:(looking at Lucky) Gone?

Lucky:(smiling) Uh..not quite. You sort of made it worse.

Liz: Worse?

Lucky:(nodding) Yeah.....(nervously) Uh...here let me.

He took the napkin from her and gently began to wipe her face clean. He used his left hand to hold her face in place. Elizabeth tingled from his fingers on her jaw. Lucky leaned in closer to finish and his heart beat a little faster at how close theirs face were. He quickly finished and leaned back.

Liz:(smiling) Thanks.

Lucky: You're welcome.

Suddenly, the announcer's voice came over the loud speaker. He told them to turn their attention to a large screen.

Liz:(curiously) Hmm..I wonder what's going on?

They both watched as a picture of a young man and woman flashed across the screen. Then, following it, the words....* I love you, Tricia....Will you marry me?*

Liz:(excitedly) Oh, someone's proposing! How sweet!

They both kept watching and the cameras showed a man and a woman in seats in the upper deck. He reached into a Cracker Jacks box and pulled out a small box. Then he opened it and turned to the woman. She was crying and when he asked his question, she nodded furiously and then threw her arms around him.

Lucky:(smiling) I guess that means yes.

Liz:(dreamily) Oh, that was just the sweetest thing I've ever seen! ....Wasn't it, Lucky?

Lucky: Yeah, it was sweet.....But...(nervously)...I guess I would want to do something more..uh..private...if it was me.

Liz:(nodding) Yeah that's true.

Liz turned to Lucky and their eyes met. They were staring at each other. Lucky continued, almost without realizing it, as they held their gaze.

Lucky:(softly) I guess...if I...uh.. was going to ask the...girl..I mean woman...I loved I'd want it to be special...just the two of us.

Liz:(nodding and keeping their gaze) Yeah...I know what you mean....I would want us to be alone...It'd be more romantic.

They both said these things as they looked deep into the others eyes. They were speaking from their hearts....and each was thinking of the other as they spoke of their wishes. They were still locked in a stare when the crack of the bat broke it. They immediately turned their attention back to the game.

The game held their attention for seconds, before they were thinking of the other again. A smile spread across Liz's face. *Yes, Lucky, I would want to be some place private, too....But it wouldn't really matter as long as the guy who was asking was...you.*

Lucky grinned and ran a hand through his hair. *That was intense. As I said those things to her...I was thinking of her.....Picturing myself asking her.....Wow..This is happening fast...The way I feel about her....It's so strong.....And when I pictured that scene in my head.....It looked so right....So perfect.* He smiled again and happily shook his head.

Lost In Your Eyes
by Debbie Gibson

I get lost
In your eyes
And I feel my spirit rise
And soar like the wind
Is it love that I'm in?

I get weak
In a glance
Isn't this what's called romance?
And now I know
'Cause when I'm lost
I can't let go

BRIDGE:
I don't mind not knowing what I'm heading for
You can take me to the sky
It's like being lost in heaven
When I'm lost in your eyes

I just fell
Don't know why
Something's there we can't deny
When I first knew
Was when I first looked at you

And if I can't find my way
If salvation seems worlds away
Oh, I'll be found
When I am lost in your eyes

BRIDGE

I get weak
In a glance
Isn't this what's call romance?
Oh, I'll be found
When I am lost in your eyes
